Dog Talk

The Taste Test…Oh Boy.

This morning a delightful couple stopped in for a quick tour.

You could tell from the get go that they loved their dogs!

Judging by their questions about our daily routine, kennel cleanliness etc…. they wanted to make sure that we would take care of them the way they do.

We started to talk about dog food.

We see so many types of food here. But one of the popular brands we see a lot is called “Blue”.

It is a dry food that has two types of kibble. One regular size kibble that is a brown color and a tiny dark round one.

It reminds me of a bowl of cereal with blue berries.

We used to feed it to our Zoe and Preston but we found that they liked to eat all the large kibble but left all the berries behind.

I told this couple my experience with this brand of dog food with our own pets.

I even sent a comment to the company to provide a “non-berry” option because I really like the food…but I don’t like the berry clean up.

The gentleman replied “I’m not sure why they would leave those behind, they taste good.”

UMMM…Really?!

He let me know that he tests all his dogs food. He wants to make sure that it is a food his dogs will love.

So, if he likes it, they will like it.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised…but I then thought….

This is a true dog lover standing in front of me!

If Reynolds Kennels can make THIS couple happy…we can make anyone happy!

We look forward to having their dogs come visit next week…and we are ready for the “HAPPY” challenge.

(Sorry, you won’t catch me testing the dog food though :0)

Samanthas’ Thoughts….Uncensored!

Samantha and I are driving to swimming lessons today.

Samantha and Zoey

Sam: Mom, Do you like poodles?

Me: Yes, I love poodles. Do you?

Sam: I like most poodles.

(30 second pause)

Sam: Why do poodles start with poo?

Me: I’m not sure but we always say the whole word not just that shorten word.

(15 second pause)

Sam: I’m glad they aren’t called PEEDLES!

Dog Pearls..who would have thought?!

Dog laundry… I have learned to love. It was hard to find joy in this weekly chore but I have found dog laundry has it’s own fun surprises…

Dog Pearls!

Dog Pearls!

As you can guess the bedding that is used to make our furry guests comfortable gets a bit dirty and hairy. Especially when you have a bunch of Labrador Retrievers or Bernese Mountain dogs in house.

I know in the pearl world, the color and size of the pearls depends on its type of oyster or how long it has been growing inside of the shell.

Dog Pearl Bed (my washing machine)

For us, it is the same concept. Our pearls depend on how much hair is in the bedding. The color of fur that has been deposited and of course where is is positioned in my washer.

We have found they come out in all shapes and sizes.

As you can see some are small, others are large.

They are dark and light. Tightly woven (very valuable) or a loose weave.(not so valuable)

To find the perfectly round ones (that are nice and tight) are far and few between.

photo (3)

All Shapes, Sizes and Colors.

They are considered priceless!

I have been saving them for the past couple of months. I have quite the collection already. I’m sure you would be impressed.

I plan to make my daughters prom necklace out of them.

I’m sure she will love it! :0)

Girls are so worried about being duplicated by another girl at the dance.

I have been drug all over the Portland Metro area to find “THE” dress that no other girl will be wearing.

I promised her… NO OTHER GIRL… will have this kind of accessory.

If I keep my laundry skills up I may have enough for a pair of earrings too!

Gross to Beautiful… It’s Just How You Look at It

It was late at night when Derek and I were able to get out to run the dogs. Our children’s homework got the best of us, so we were a bit late. It is so dark out there without any street lights around. We have 2 big spot lights that we shine over the runs and one overhead light down by the kennels.

Excuse me, You have a touch of slobber on your face...Let me get that!

Excuse me, You have a touch of slobber on your face…Let me get that!

We need more lights but that is still on the list of things to do.

Derek and I were visiting because the last run of the day is the least busy. Dogs are tired and we are out there to get that last potty break done.

We were at the far end of the run…away from the lights. I turned around and across the dog run were a of bunch of sparkles…like little prisms everywhere. I called to Derek. ..”Turn around!”

As Derek turned around, he was also shocked by all the sparkles.  Six dogs had drool dripping from their mouths…some almost reaching the ground. It was like they had all stopped to compare each others drool talents. The lights were shining through them all. Changing this normally gross scene…to beautiful.

It was amazing how the lights sparkled through all that spit!

It reminded me of that Pollyanna movie when she hung all those prisms in that crabby lady’s window….

It is always good to see the positive in all things!

Love/Hate….Laundry!

Spring Break

Lots of Dogs…Lots of Rain…Lots of Dirt.

Need I say more!

Not a good time for our washer to go out, but we need clean, fresh bedding for our furry friends.

A couple hours at the laundromat can be peaceful…if you embrace it.

All in the attitude…2 hours instead of 2 days.

I enjoyed it :0)

Our Zoey…Mostly Dog…Part Stinker

The Reynolds Family would not be complete without our own furry family members.

sam

Samantha and Zoey

We currently have two schnoodles in the household. Zoey and Preston. Meet Zoey…

After our Yorkie, Rose passed away, we were not sure if we wanted to stay with the yorkie breed or get something different. We just found out that we were moving to our 6 acres.

We thought a larger breed of dog would be better suited for the move. Our vet had told us about his schnoodles and they peaked our interest.

They are a schnauzer/poodle mix. I know there has been a big “doodle” epidemic the last 5-10 years. Every breed under the sun has been bred with the poodle. We have seen some crazy mixes at the kennel. Beagadoodles, labradoodles, goldensdoodles, cockapoo, morkiepoo, germandoodles, jackapoo, lhasapoo (and my favorite) pekepoo.(sounds a bit nasty :0)  Just to name a few. I know the non-shed factor is the biggest reason, but I have noticed that some breed traits mixed with the poodle are very interesting…and at times conflicting.

Poodles by nature are very people pleasing, obedient, loyal breed. They work hard to gain the affection of their family. They can be very busy and energetic. Of course, they have hair instead of fur.

Schnauzers are stubborn, generally defiant. Super smart. Great hunters and lovers :0) They will “try” to be obedient …only if it doesn’t interrupt their personal agenda.

Zoey trying to sleep

I often see the inner conflict in our Zoey. She clearly is 50/50 in the breed split.

She will catch a smell of a squirrel or bird and is ready to engage in the chase….then I call her back.  The inner poodle surfaces for a moment. I know she wants to do as I ask…but the schnauzer pull is too great. I can see on her face she has two little voices speaking to her. One on each shoulder.

(Angel Poodle Dog) “Zoey, you really want to do what your human mom says. You may get a treat out of this :0)”

(Devil Schnauzer Dog) ” You know you want to attack that animal. The whole neighborhood will think you are soooo cool!!!”

The devil usually wins!

For example:

This is her reaction when I want her to get off my couch.   Zoey likes to sit on the back of my couch. She  is smooshing the top of one of my cushions. It makes me buggy. She knows she is not supposed to be there.

I know we all have dogs that we wonder why we put up with what they do. Scratching walls/doors. Eats food off the table. Chews furniture and clothing. Hides shoes. Digs in the flower beds. Drools on your pants. Runs down the street. Stresses out the cat. Drinks out of the toilet. HAIR EVERYWHERE!!!

I could go on and on and on….but even with all the little buggy things Zoey does, life wouldn’t be the same without her.

Now You See Them….Now You Don’t!

Every month, money is spent on tennis balls. Some months it is 100 balls worth. Other months (summer) we can go through a few hundred balls. We are also fortunate that some of our clients donate tennis balls too.

Most balls get eaten alive and end up in the trash. Some balls get thrown in the “waste” section and deemed no good! Some get thrown over the fence and a few weeks later we go on a ball hunt and collect the few that we can find.

Barney

Barney

Barney, the Newfoundland, was in kennel for a couple weeks. He is the kind grandpa type. Very easy going but if those young pups start to get out of hand…he will mosey over and let them know they need to settle down.

 He appreciates a good ball.

A few weeks ago, I had Ella throw a whole new set in…we needed them after the holiday rush and all the ball were ruined.  It is nice to see all the bright yellow balls in the run. The dogs immediately start to enjoy them.

We clean out all the dogs kennels every morning during breakfast. We like to get in there after a good nights sleep and get all the bits of dirt and fur that comes with having a dog. We place all the bedding back in place and fill up their bowls.

Just another morning…

During the course of the day, I noticed all of our nice new balls were starting to disappear. I figured they were getting dirty and they were blending in with their surroundings. After the 3rd run of the day, It was noticeable that the balls were missing.  I figured I would send Spencer out to collect them from the pasture… where I am sure many balls had been sent.

We love you Barney!

We love you Barney!

The next morning, I was going about my daily cleaning duties….I entered Barneys kennel. He always has a thick pad and a blanket…I picked up the blanket to shake it out…low and behold there were at least 7 balls! He was smuggling in balls and then moving them into the corner of his kennel.

Breakfast prep finished. I called the dogs in…Barney enters.

I stopped him and made him lift his lips.

Yes, there were two more balls to add to his collection…

Introducing….A Day at Reynolds Kennels

Derek Reynolds Family

Derek Reynolds Family

Reynolds Kennels has grown to be a family business that is lucky to have a big group of dog lovers.

Derek and I moved to Oregon in 2000 and love it! We have lived in Tualatin for 14 years.

We have 5 children.

Madelyn 19, Ella 16, Spencer 14, Olivia 7 and Samantha 4. (Sam will be 5 next week)

When we moved to our property 7 years ago, we had no plans to build a kennel to care for our furry friends.

We had 2 dogs of our own. Zoe and Preston. Schnoodles

Our oldest, Madelyn, was 14 at the time. She was asked to care for a couple dogs while their parents were on an extended business trip (37 days). Those two king cavalier spaniels moved right in our house. We had so much fun! Everyone in the house participated in their care.

That was the day Reynolds Kennels was born. From our house, to our old barn, to an upgraded building…soon to our new kennel (May 2014)

Our kennel story is truly the American dream.

I will share more of our kennel stories later…but I want to make sure I include our wonderful staff today.

We are grateful to have Julie, our only other (almost full time) staff member. Along with 12 other teenage dog lovers.

We could not keep our dogs happy without our  wonderful “almost adults”.

David and Nate

There is something about spending time with these young adults, that really makes life special at our kennel. Our canine friends really feel a love from them that is different from adults. Teenagers are out there to have fun!

We have lots of talent on our staff as well. Taylor is one of our current staff members. He not only is great with our dogs but he enjoys filming them. I am in awe of what these kids can to with the technology out there.

Frankly, it often goes over my head.

But when Taylor brought this in to me…I just had to share it with all of you.

I call it…..”A Day at Reynolds Kennels”  That is not very creative but that is exactly what Taylor has captured.

I hope Taylor will keep sharing his talents with us….so I can share them with you!
