Just Good Kids… No Matter What!

My niece, Amanda has been staying with us all summer. She is from Utah and she came this summer to work at the kennel.

She loves ALL the dogs!

She has been a joy to have around!

The 8:15pm dog run just ended and our older and wiser staff were talking about Jamba Juice. My niece Amanda whispers to me…”I’ve never been to Jamba Juice.”

THAT IS A TRAGEDY!

Ryan, Corey and Lauren (college, now college and senior in high school) could have easily looked the other way with this young 8th grader…but they didn’t.

It's Jamba Time!

Ryan, Amanda, Lauren and Corey.

They all just loaded in the car and drove to our local Jamba Juice and officially treated Amanda to her first RAZMATAZ (a classic)

I appreciate the friendships our staff have with each other. It warms my heart to see so many good kids do so many good things.

I know Amanda will feel a little older tonight just because she was included with such a mature bunch.

More importantly, their few minutes of time contributed to a young girls self worth.

Thanks for being who you are…Ryan, Corey…and Lauren. You all are priceless.

Who is the 11:00am Dog Run Favorite?

Our staff is a bunch of fun teenage kids! You have to be in high school to work here.

We are proud that our staff is the young and fun.

We learned very quickly that kids make the best dog… friends, lovers and play mates.  :0)

Each dog run of the day, a different furry friend rises to the top of their favorites list.

Who was your favorite dog during this dog run?

When I ask our staff that question multiple times a day…I usually get multiple answers.

I LOVE THAT!

It warms my heart to watch all of these kids work!

Camera Shy…I don’t think so!

When we are in clean up mode in the kennel. We get our hands dirty!

That is just a fact.

We have mud, dirt , slobber, throw up, wet food, wet bedding, hair, fur..you name it we clean it.

Julie had just come up from a deep clean. I was glad I had my camera handy. She enters the office and looks down at her hands.

She let out some sort of noise crossed between disgust and “You got to be kidding me!”

Look closer… Julie isn’t camera shy.

Look closer… Julie isn’t camera shy…Yes, that is a gushy brown treasure that stuck like glue to her hands.

I don’t necessarily like to talk about poop. It is generally not the best topic of conversation.

But to be frank, it is a BIG part of our world.

Because it is, we here at Reynolds Kennels choose to embrace it.

But we try not to embrace it in a literal sense. (but sometimes we do :0)

We had a good laugh while Julie emptied the hand sanitizer all over herself!

Our New Kennel….Almost done.

I know many of you have been around at some point the last 8 months. We got the go from Washington County over a year ago. We FINALLY could move forward on the construction of our new kennel.

Building ALWAYS takes longer than expected. Our situation is no different.

Construction has been kind of fun to watch. When they poured the gigantic slab of cement last fall, it was overwhelming.

That slab would have made a great basketball court!

The Walls are Up.

Projects like this always make my head spin.

Nice Covered Area.

Derek is a licensed contractor. Listening to the engineers/contractors as they were speaking a language (I clearly did not know) was always a treat.

I’m glad Derek can speak a second language.

Now that the siding is on the outside and all the drywall is hung. Samantha and I are in charge of painting the inside.

She has been such a hard worker.

Madelyn took Samantha to the store and she found some red cowboy boots.

We let her know if she earns half the money, we can get those “Footloose” boots.

Samantha (5) The best kennel painter ever.

She has been painting with me that last few days. I have been very impressed with her diligence.  She painted all the nail holes in all of our base boards. That is no small task. She has almost earned enough money. ($25.00)

I’m sure she will be sporting her new fire feet soon!

Fun with our paint brushes.

But what makes me happy is that Samantha will be able to walk through the halls of our kennel for years to come and remember her part of building our family business.

We wanted to have the kennel  finished a few yesterdays ago.  Things just don’t go as planned.

We hope that by the end of July, we can show you a facility that will bring you peace when you leave your furry four legged family member with us.

We want it to feel like their other home.

Thanks for all your support with our next big step in our pet world.

Who knows, maybe when we have emptied the current dog space …maybe we might start kenneling cats :0)

Now wouldn’t that be an interesting idea.

Schools Out… Time to go to work!

I just finished my sons last band concert. That is my que that summer is on the way.

Most kids can sleep in until 10:00am  just because they can. That is a luxury our great staff at Reynolds Kennels gives up to work here.

Bright and early at 7:00am (on the dot) we are releasing our guests outside to empty that full bladder and stretch their legs.

As you can tell, we have lots of teenagers that help out. We learned very quickly that kids play…dogs play…perfect match!

We have such a great bunch of people I just need to take a minute to introduce them to all of you.

(bottom to top) Derek, Taylor, Madelyn, Corey, Ryan, Luis, Ashlee, Savannah, Tegan, Spencer, Nick, Andrew and (of course) Julie.

Ella, Spencer H , Jane, Colin and Lauren are not there. (Krista behind the camera)

We have a couple new people this year but most of this group has been with us at least 3 years. Some are going on their 6th year. That says a lot!

They love being with your animals.

Every year we have a big staff meeting to get our new dog lovers up to speed. Plus ,we like to remind our veterans of our positive goals for our summer season.

I always find Derek’s wording on some of the meeting information sheet quite interesting.

For instance (and I quote)

We want to see petting, hugs, loving, touching, squeezing during the dog run. Again, we are talking about the dogs and not each other!”

Where else would you read that during a staff meeting?!

However, this one is my new favorite.

Wednesday is not only hump day but also poop day.”

He was referring to the waste being removed each week….but I wish you could have seen all the looks that were being passed around that meeting after Derek read that out loud. I recall a bit of snickering and a lot of shifting in their seats. Always entertaining for me.

Even though our summer is not the time the Reynolds family vacations, it is my favorite time of year.

We love to see all of our great staff as much as we can. They help Derek and I be better people.

It is fun to watch these kids grow up over the years. We are on our third round of high school graduates. It is truly a blessing for Derek and I to witness.

We not only teach these kids how to care for dogs. We watch them learn how to communicate with you (our guests) and with each other.

They learn to respect each dogs breed to better take care of each dog individually.

They learn a good round of ball throwing calms not only their canine friend but it brings a peace to them as well.

I could go on and on…and on!

Derek and I even help with advice about their “love ” lives. :0)

I just wanted to give you all a glimpse of who your dogs get to rub shoulders with (or slobber on) this 2014 summer.

Hope to see you all soon…I’ll be the one with the smile on my face.

Happy Summer!

Spring Crazy…Tuesday!

Okay, we woke up a bit tired today….but it didn’t take to long to jump into the spirit of some good ole’  fashioned ball fun.

I could really use some help on my right arm pitching but I don’t think my team really cares. As long as I am doing my best…right ?! We are out 4 times a day (an hour each time)…doing just this…playing with our furry guests.

Exercise is key to a good kennel experience! We make sure every four legged friend gets out and enjoys time stretching their legs.

Colin and Madelyn are on baby dog duty. I appreciate that they get right down with them and love them up. Nothing is better than soaking in  all that attention…same for the dogs too. :0)

How can you not smile?!  Kennel full 5 days and counting…We are so blessed!

Spring Crazy!…Monday

Spring break is not the same for us at Reynolds Kennels. The word “break” should be changed to CRAZY.

Madelyn with Homer and Shasta

While our clients are out soaking in the sun or hunting for snow, we are filledl to the brim.

I love these busy times.

We get to see all of our staff often. Dog energy is high. We go to bed tired and happy. (just like our dogs)

Our spirits are fed with your dogs unconditional  love. Our young staff  learns the meaning of hard work. Our clients know that their dogs are having fun.

I dropped off my youngest children at their gymnastics camp this morning. I couldn’t help but think all of our kennel guests are at their camp as well.

They get to be in a “dog park” four times a day. Mixing and socializing with our great staff.

More important, they mix with each other. Dogs love to be with their own kind.

Just imagine how your heart melts when your dog is waiting to greet you at the door….times that by 50!

I’m going to post a glimpse of our world everyday this week. Enjoy! We are. :0)

The Great Day Care Conspiracy

Dramatic theater happens at Reynolds Kennels all the time.

Title: The Great Day Care Conspiracy

Lead Actors : Xavi  (mini aussie) and Millie (border collie)

Supporting cast:  Molly (boxer)  Zoe (chiwauwa mix) Buster (springer spaniel) and Sandy (lab)

(Scene set up)

Another great day care day at Reynolds Kennels. Julie is out playing with our furry friends. Xavi, notices Millie off to the side with something on her mind.

He decides to inquire.

Xavi: Millie, What are you thinking about?

Millie: I just love Julie. She is so wonderful! She plays with us and gives us treats. I just wish I could kiss her all over her face.

Xavi: Why don’t you?

Millie: Because Julie just doesn’t give me the opportunity. (Millie is very sad)

Xavi: (has a bit of a crush on Millie) I’ll take care of that….Millie, you go stand behind her and I will do the rest.

(Xavi calling everyone into a huddle)

Xavi: All right…listen up! I’m going to go and play ball with Julie.

Molly, Buster, Sandy and Zoe create a diversion….then watch my “Kiss Julies’ Face” plan be executed to perfection.

Millie…. you deserve your wish!

(press play below :0)

Julie is key to our family kennels success. Thanks Julie for all your hard work….Our furry friends feel your love for them every day :0)

Introducing….A Day at Reynolds Kennels

Derek Reynolds Family

Derek Reynolds Family

Reynolds Kennels has grown to be a family business that is lucky to have a big group of dog lovers.

Derek and I moved to Oregon in 2000 and love it! We have lived in Tualatin for 14 years.

We have 5 children.

Madelyn 19, Ella 16, Spencer 14, Olivia 7 and Samantha 4. (Sam will be 5 next week)

When we moved to our property 7 years ago, we had no plans to build a kennel to care for our furry friends.

We had 2 dogs of our own. Zoe and Preston. Schnoodles

Our oldest, Madelyn, was 14 at the time. She was asked to care for a couple dogs while their parents were on an extended business trip (37 days). Those two king cavalier spaniels moved right in our house. We had so much fun! Everyone in the house participated in their care.

That was the day Reynolds Kennels was born. From our house, to our old barn, to an upgraded building…soon to our new kennel (May 2014)

Our kennel story is truly the American dream.

I will share more of our kennel stories later…but I want to make sure I include our wonderful staff today.

We are grateful to have Julie, our only other (almost full time) staff member. Along with 12 other teenage dog lovers.

We could not keep our dogs happy without our  wonderful “almost adults”.

David and Nate

There is something about spending time with these young adults, that really makes life special at our kennel. Our canine friends really feel a love from them that is different from adults. Teenagers are out there to have fun!

We have lots of talent on our staff as well. Taylor is one of our current staff members. He not only is great with our dogs but he enjoys filming them. I am in awe of what these kids can to with the technology out there.

Frankly, it often goes over my head.

But when Taylor brought this in to me…I just had to share it with all of you.

I call it…..”A Day at Reynolds Kennels”  That is not very creative but that is exactly what Taylor has captured.

I hope Taylor will keep sharing his talents with us….so I can share them with you!
