Kennel Essay Contest…What has Reynolds Kennels Taught Me?

Every year Reynolds Kennels has an end of summer campfire night.

August142014 002

Just some good ole’ campfire fun

We have so many teenagers that work for us that it is important to have a fun night of marshmallows and chocolate.

Our employees are friends with each other too.

Derek and I love to watch them jump on our trampoline, chat about going back to school… just being kids.

August142014 004

Taylor and Tegan

As a  “get ready for school” activity, we ask all the kids to take a few minutes to write an essay based on a topic we give them.

We offer some cash prizes to the top 3 entries…and frankly, it can be very entertaining.

In years past, the topics have been subjects like…

“How Poop and Slobber has changed my life” and “When I look through a dogs eyes I see…”

Those are a couple of examples.

This years our topic was….”Since working at Reynolds, the most important lesson I’ve learned is…”

Here is our first place winner this year, Ryan Elder.

(Sorry it is a bit dark…it is night time)

We love how creative these kids can be. We love to hear the many angles that this working experience shows them about life. We appreciate that they can see beyond just the kennel tasks to see that they are learning skills they will use beyond their time with us.

Great Job Ryan!…and everyone else who participated.

Derek and I enjoyed our bonfire night and maybe…just maybe…. they are ready to get back in school…not!

Dogs can write?! Kind of…

We love to get mail.  Snail Mail!

Every few weeks or so we get card or note from our furry friends and their families.

A couple days a go we were delighted to get a card from our friends Gunner and Maverick.

august 122104 004

Gunner and Maverick

Gunners eyes would melt anyone.A big love bug.

He loved to rally the troops when needed and he was always up for a good scratch with the best of them…

Maverick (however) you had to earn his respect. Sometime hesitant … but the challenge was met with patience and open arms.

That bow tie sums Maverick right up.

A bit formal in all of his dealings.

aug12 002When we receive notes like this from long time clients… it is bitter sweet.

The Crouse family is headed to Austin Texas.

I’ve been there a few times in my life.

Austin is a wonderful place.

Now it will be even better with these two furry people (and the human ones) to help improve the property value down there.

We always hang these cards in our office. We want our staff to be reminded that their hard work does not go unnoticed.

aug12 001

Our dog friends give us lots of licks and slobbery feedback often…daily.

But it is important to Derek and I that our staff see that their efforts warrant someone taking a moment to send us thanks.

That makes me proud of who they are and what we do!

We wish the Crouse Family all the best in their travels and the new adventure in their lives.

The blessing is that they have two wonderful dogs that are ready at anytime to give them comfort …if and when change is hard.

Dogs help make change easier. That is one of their many talents.

Just Good Kids… No Matter What!

My niece, Amanda has been staying with us all summer. She is from Utah and she came this summer to work at the kennel.

She loves ALL the dogs!

She has been a joy to have around!

The 8:15pm dog run just ended and our older and wiser staff were talking about Jamba Juice. My niece Amanda whispers to me…”I’ve never been to Jamba Juice.”

THAT IS A TRAGEDY!

Ryan, Corey and Lauren (college, now college and senior in high school) could have easily looked the other way with this young 8th grader…but they didn’t.

It's Jamba Time!

Ryan, Amanda, Lauren and Corey.

They all just loaded in the car and drove to our local Jamba Juice and officially treated Amanda to her first RAZMATAZ (a classic)

I appreciate the friendships our staff have with each other. It warms my heart to see so many good kids do so many good things.

I know Amanda will feel a little older tonight just because she was included with such a mature bunch.

More importantly, their few minutes of time contributed to a young girls self worth.

Thanks for being who you are…Ryan, Corey…and Lauren. You all are priceless.

Belly Itch….or Swimming Laps?

I remember being a young girl and my father would talk with me about homework, curfew….life. During the conversation he would slowly walk over to the corner of the wall and start to rub his back up and down.

When he did that, I would picture the old National Geographic programs.

The big brown bear working out that itch on the side of a tree. The tree eventually breaking to the ground.

Dogs get itches too. We see scratching behind the ears, neck, sides…all over!

Dogs struggle with allergies that cause some irritation. Just like humans.

Moose is no different.

He gets VERY itchy on his tummy.

After Moose has done the rounds with all of his selected play groups, he finds one of us to give him a good scratch down.

But this morning he was a bit impatient…so he took matters into his own hands.

I’m not quite sure but… I do think their is a breast stroke in there some where.

I’m sure if he could get that darling (athletic) body to twirl we would have seen some very intricate moves.

Either way, I’m sure a good scoot along the bark chips accomplished just what he needed….a good belly scratch!

I need the rake to take care of his wake…Moose is one of a kind!

Who is the 11:00am Dog Run Favorite?

Our staff is a bunch of fun teenage kids! You have to be in high school to work here.

We are proud that our staff is the young and fun.

We learned very quickly that kids make the best dog… friends, lovers and play mates.  :0)

Each dog run of the day, a different furry friend rises to the top of their favorites list.

Who was your favorite dog during this dog run?

When I ask our staff that question multiple times a day…I usually get multiple answers.

I LOVE THAT!

It warms my heart to watch all of these kids work!

The Taste Test…Oh Boy.

This morning a delightful couple stopped in for a quick tour.

You could tell from the get go that they loved their dogs!

Judging by their questions about our daily routine, kennel cleanliness etc…. they wanted to make sure that we would take care of them the way they do.

We started to talk about dog food.

We see so many types of food here. But one of the popular brands we see a lot is called “Blue”.

It is a dry food that has two types of kibble. One regular size kibble that is a brown color and a tiny dark round one.

It reminds me of a bowl of cereal with blue berries.

We used to feed it to our Zoe and Preston but we found that they liked to eat all the large kibble but left all the berries behind.

I told this couple my experience with this brand of dog food with our own pets.

I even sent a comment to the company to provide a “non-berry” option because I really like the food…but I don’t like the berry clean up.

The gentleman replied “I’m not sure why they would leave those behind, they taste good.”

UMMM…Really?!

He let me know that he tests all his dogs food. He wants to make sure that it is a food his dogs will love.

So, if he likes it, they will like it.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised…but I then thought….

This is a true dog lover standing in front of me!

If Reynolds Kennels can make THIS couple happy…we can make anyone happy!

We look forward to having their dogs come visit next week…and we are ready for the “HAPPY” challenge.

(Sorry, you won’t catch me testing the dog food though :0)

Camera Shy…I don’t think so!

When we are in clean up mode in the kennel. We get our hands dirty!

That is just a fact.

We have mud, dirt , slobber, throw up, wet food, wet bedding, hair, fur..you name it we clean it.

Julie had just come up from a deep clean. I was glad I had my camera handy. She enters the office and looks down at her hands.

She let out some sort of noise crossed between disgust and “You got to be kidding me!”

Look closer… Julie isn’t camera shy.

Look closer… Julie isn’t camera shy…Yes, that is a gushy brown treasure that stuck like glue to her hands.

I don’t necessarily like to talk about poop. It is generally not the best topic of conversation.

But to be frank, it is a BIG part of our world.

Because it is, we here at Reynolds Kennels choose to embrace it.

But we try not to embrace it in a literal sense. (but sometimes we do :0)

We had a good laugh while Julie emptied the hand sanitizer all over herself!

Schools Out… Time to go to work!

I just finished my sons last band concert. That is my que that summer is on the way.

Most kids can sleep in until 10:00am  just because they can. That is a luxury our great staff at Reynolds Kennels gives up to work here.

Bright and early at 7:00am (on the dot) we are releasing our guests outside to empty that full bladder and stretch their legs.

As you can tell, we have lots of teenagers that help out. We learned very quickly that kids play…dogs play…perfect match!

We have such a great bunch of people I just need to take a minute to introduce them to all of you.

(bottom to top) Derek, Taylor, Madelyn, Corey, Ryan, Luis, Ashlee, Savannah, Tegan, Spencer, Nick, Andrew and (of course) Julie.

Ella, Spencer H , Jane, Colin and Lauren are not there. (Krista behind the camera)

We have a couple new people this year but most of this group has been with us at least 3 years. Some are going on their 6th year. That says a lot!

They love being with your animals.

Every year we have a big staff meeting to get our new dog lovers up to speed. Plus ,we like to remind our veterans of our positive goals for our summer season.

I always find Derek’s wording on some of the meeting information sheet quite interesting.

For instance (and I quote)

We want to see petting, hugs, loving, touching, squeezing during the dog run. Again, we are talking about the dogs and not each other!”

Where else would you read that during a staff meeting?!

However, this one is my new favorite.

Wednesday is not only hump day but also poop day.”

He was referring to the waste being removed each week….but I wish you could have seen all the looks that were being passed around that meeting after Derek read that out loud. I recall a bit of snickering and a lot of shifting in their seats. Always entertaining for me.

Even though our summer is not the time the Reynolds family vacations, it is my favorite time of year.

We love to see all of our great staff as much as we can. They help Derek and I be better people.

It is fun to watch these kids grow up over the years. We are on our third round of high school graduates. It is truly a blessing for Derek and I to witness.

We not only teach these kids how to care for dogs. We watch them learn how to communicate with you (our guests) and with each other.

They learn to respect each dogs breed to better take care of each dog individually.

They learn a good round of ball throwing calms not only their canine friend but it brings a peace to them as well.

I could go on and on…and on!

Derek and I even help with advice about their “love ” lives. :0)

I just wanted to give you all a glimpse of who your dogs get to rub shoulders with (or slobber on) this 2014 summer.

Hope to see you all soon…I’ll be the one with the smile on my face.

Happy Summer!

Lou…Just look at him now!

This is a very big weekend at the kennel. Memorial Day weekend is the kick off to our busy season.

We love Lou!

Meet Lou.

Last Thursday he was dropped off at our kennel for the first time. His owner is a wonderful lady. Lou was found on the streets of California. They think he is about 3-4 years old and they don’t know much other than that…

She warned me that he is quick to growl and be assertive although he has never actually made contact.

I went ahead and introduced him to a VERY small group. Molly our resident grandma was part of that group. She is our old boxer soul that likes to make sure everyone understands the rules of the land.

Lou was quick to pronounce his stance with some good assertive growls…Molly in return decided to one up him. I decided to be the winner of the noise game.

I let out a nice big scream…holding both of their collars….I won!

It takes a minute for dogs to understand that we are on their team.

My heart always softens for animals that  had to endure who knows what…but because of the past, reactive assumptions is how they are wired.

We take the time to earn their respect, build history, so they can trust that we want them to be safe.

We want them to get out here and play.

The first couple dog runs we kept Lou with just a few select friends. Just look at him now!

You can tell his posture is still very hesitant but he sniffing out those cell phone numbers! The key is his tail. Every dog run that tail wags a little bit more. :0)  He decided that he is going to test the waters with his “almost” friends. Even though, he keeps coming back to check in to make sure he is okay.

Busy holiday weekends are like a social anxiety boot camp.

They get to play four times a day. Twenty-three opportunities during the 4 days to be reminded he is safe.

It is like your parents throwing you out in the deep end in the pool growing up. Sink or swim!

Yes, I was pretty mad at my Dad for tossing me in, but I knew he was a good swimmer…so I knew everything would be alright.

Lou trusts his new family. They will have to continue to renew that trust everyday that he is in their care. What Lou gives back to them is more than enough to keep moving forward as a family.

Dogs know how to forgive easily but most do not forget….it is the forgetting part that I wish we all could be blessed with when it comes to some of our past (not so great) times.

We are happy for Lou and the bright future he has in front of him.  We were thankful we were trusted to watch his tail wag.

It’s All About Teeth!

We give tours here at Reynolds kennels. People want to see what a typical day is for Reynolds Kennels.

Most make an appointment . But there are those who like to drop in unannounced because they don’t want us to plan for them.

Is it clean? Are the dogs being treated well? Is everyone happy to be here?

They all declare they want to see where the dogs will sleep…We ALWAYS show them.

I’m VERY proud of my teeth!

Then they comment before leaving, “If you would not have shown us the kennel…we would not have booked!”

Many kennels don’t want you to see the back areas…just for that reason. They are not kept clean.

I have a very clean kennel!

A tour I had yesterday was a little different…

The gal got out of her car.

She was just what I expected from our conversation on the phone. A upper middle class lady. Her dog is her child. Up to date on all the fashions…Her 4 inch heels spoke volumes.

I showed her through the dog kennel.

She showed me pictures of her dog.

She wobbled around the property in those shoes.

Then she said something interesting to me…” I am happy with everything you do here. I knew this was a good place because you have all your teeth.”

Then she went on to say, “You and your family are not what I expected.”

I was a little taken back but I just laughed. But I have been processing her comment all day.

What I think she meant was…” I’m surprised white collar people have chosen a blue collar world.”

I’m going to think about this one for a while.
