Grand daughters and Grand dogs

You wake up one day and life hands you little blessings. I just had to quickly share…

It really is true about the grand parent thing. norahgracie1

My first grandbaby arrived in October. That was a moment for me that will go down in the books as one of the greatest highlights of our life. She is both of her parents wrapped up in pink. Norah has already revealed her stubborn side in her 4 month little way.

I have loved moving into “Nonie” land.

But what I didn’t expect was turning into a dog grandparent was just as fun.   I haven’t had the actual experience of being a dogs grandparent until Gracie Lou  joined the scene. IMG_7308

I knew our daughter Madelyn would get a dog the moment she had a house and the means to take care of it properly. Done!

Being the grandparent to both Norah and Gracie is one of the best perks….

Love them… then send them home!

Quiet snowball making… with Leo.

No surprise that we got dumped with snow this week. About 6:15 am we heard a loud POP! We had 4 trees total fall on our property. One landed on the power line connected to the kennel. Our dog run at 7:00 required us to wear head lamps until the sun helped us out.

My son Spencer kept pegging me with snowballs. I’d be actively looking for our morning canine deposits before they were lost in the white powder… then I would feel yet another peg hit my shoulder or back.

Get serious Spencer!

That’s exactly what he did.

Out of the corner of my eye I see him making a nice big snowball for his mother.

Leo, was helping him smooth it out!

Well, he was definitely trying to get Spencer’s attention. They worked on it for several minutes getting it to a nice “this is going to hurt” size.

It wasn’t to long before that snowball was headed my way or at least Spencer tried.

Leo is one of the kindest dogs. I’m not sure why golden retrievers are so people oriented. Always ready to snuggle right up and be a friend.  This morning dog run was just fun to watch the dogs enjoy the snow…just because… it doesn’t come very often here.

Madelyn and Mowgli

My oldest daughter Madelyn decided to take my sewing machine home a couple months ago.I didn’t expect to see such a wonderful gift when this beautiful quilt was given to me on Christmas morning.

Made of all the scraps of fabric that I had left over from my quilt making days.

It used to be therapy for me to sit and cut squares and triangles to sew together. Especially when I had lots of little children at home. I admit I am a teenage mom…young children were hard for me. So…time spent with color and quiet meant a lot.

Mowgli joined our family in April after we lost our beloved Zoey.

Preston (and the rest of us) needed a new little dog around.

Mowgli has been a joy and a stinker all rolled into one.

mowgliquiltI’m sure you can tell from his face that he enjoys causing a bit of trouble. His favorite activity is to drag items all over the house. I’m never quite sure where one my shoes are…and I now have to check the area for my daughters underwear before I will answer the front door.

But seeing him wrapped up in my new gift was… a gift to me.

A quick reminder that dogs bring joy and love to our lives without saying a word.

Little Girls and Little Dogs…(Deep sigh)

Just a quick share today.

I took this picture of my Samantha in the dog run a few days ago. She has been my most dedicated worker (of my own kids) over the last couple of weeks. So dedicated, she would often come out and wait close to an hour for the dog run to begin.

IMG_1870

That is Tilly she is holding…a sweet firecracker of a dog. Samantha took an active responsibility with our little dogs this year. We often caught her mediating conversations between them. Just like on the playground at her school, she wants to make sure everyone has a friend. This morning she asked me if she could become a “real” kennel worker. I’m pretty confident that we can put her on the payroll in the future.

Nothing warms my heart than a young person that isn’t scared of a little hard work.

Creative Party Pooper…Literally!

My sister Sharla and I were out putting the dogs to bed tonight.

That last potty break is very important for a good nights sleep…but we have a creative pooper in the house!

Whoever our mystery pooper is must have wanted to display his dinner for all to see.

Just part of all the fun!

I’ll grab the scoop :0)

Story Time…with Ranger and Hank.

I just finished a bedtime story with Samantha and Olivia. (our two youngest)

I enjoy the down time at the end of the day to just settle down and read.

Not sure why I thought of doing the same thing for one of our kennel guests tonight.

I figure I would take a book out to them and try it.

Olivia choose the book…The Little Puppy.

storytime 010

She thinks they would enjoy a book about about themselves.

I guess it is kind of like we humans check out People magazine to look at other humans. Every time I sit in a doctors office, I seem to always gravitate towards the magazines about people and their so called lives over the Better Homes and Gardens.

Why is that?!

So I went out and gave it a canine reading whirl after our 8:15 evening dog run tonight.

I’m not sure why I thought everyone in the kennel would just quietly lay down and listen right along.

It took them a minute to get over this big person sitting in their space…but after licking my ear off etc. They settled in right at the end.

After all… the story was VERY exciting!

I don’t see a book being the way to go the next time some late night entertainment sounds like a good idea.

I will plan a big screen event staring…. Lassie!

With popcorn and red vines for me…bacon for my friends.

I’m sure these dogs won’t even know who Lassie is…he was WAAYYYY before their time.

Just like me making my kids sit through….Sixteen Candles or The Dukes of Hazard.

Both are classics!

Dog Globe…Delightful!

Just wanted to share a delightful Christmas card we got from one of our neighbors…The Krafves!

I LOVE IT!  This one is going to be saved for future display.

It is hard to take all the holiday decorations down each year.

This one will stay on my desk for a little bit longer.

Rescue is Required…Happy to help!

I know in our world, the word RESCUE carries a lot of heavy meaning.

Reynolds Kennels was approached by a gal from Lake Oswego a couple weeks ago.

Her name is Cheri Tolar.

This gal is on a mission!

She was very excited that her new dog rescue organization “Great Northwest German Sheppard Rescue” just got their non-profit confirmation.

She is ready to start saving lives….German Shepherds lives.

Oregon in general do pretty well with the no kill shelters…however, some of our neighboring states do not.

California being one of them.

Most dogs have 3 days after being dropped off to be adopted before their life ends. Heart breaking!

Cheri came and asked if we could be of assistance in her goal  in saving a few of these great animals lives.

020

Meet Ranger!

Of course we are happy to assist!!!

Meet Gus and Ranger.

The first two animals that Cheri saved from death.

Gus (we guess) is about 13 months and Ranger is 18 months.

Both delightful!

023

Gus with his Thumper impersonation.

Spending time with these animals reminds me how important every life is on this earth.

It makes me sad to think both of these animals were hours away from being killed.

I know the wonderful families here in Oregon are ready to care for them.

I know Gus and Ranger will care for their families as well.

Just a couple more canine lives that get to keep living, keep giving…keep making a difference.

We humans are the ones that benefit. :0)

Molly is Part of Our Family…Wedding Invite

Whew!…..We made it through this CRAZY SUMMER!

Not only did we have our kennel filled to the brim but our oldest daughter Madelyn got married August 27th.

Yes, engaged in May…married in August.

Whirlwind of JOY :0)

Molly Dressed for a Wedding.

One step of the wedding planning, was compiling the guest list.

That list of  people that have been key in her (and our) life was humbling.

Honestly, that was my favorite part of the planning…being reminded of the wonderful people in our lives.

“What about Molly?” Madelyn asked

Would it be odd to invite dogs that we take care of at our kennel?

OF COURSE NOT!

Molly has been spending time with us for years. She is our resident queen and clearly lets everyone know her social standing.

She comes 3-5 days a week for day care…and I would say, she (and her owner Ed) have become part of our family.

Raising 5 kids takes lots of different people/dogs to teach all they need to know to succeed in this life.

Dogs are excellent teachers and influences. Often better than human ones.

1 copy

Molly and Ed greeting Tucker and Madelyn.

Unconditional love, respect, hope, work , peace, stability, patience….I could go on and on.

Molly is one of those dogs.

Madelyn had a few dog friends on our list.

I was pleased to see my beautiful (now married) daughter take a moment and pause to recognize who is important in her life.

Human or not.

As I expect now and in the future….the Reynolds kids will have dog friends on all of their wedding lists.

Kennel Essay Contest…What has Reynolds Kennels Taught Me?

Every year Reynolds Kennels has an end of summer campfire night.

August142014 002

Just some good ole’ campfire fun

We have so many teenagers that work for us that it is important to have a fun night of marshmallows and chocolate.

Our employees are friends with each other too.

Derek and I love to watch them jump on our trampoline, chat about going back to school… just being kids.

August142014 004

Taylor and Tegan

As a  “get ready for school” activity, we ask all the kids to take a few minutes to write an essay based on a topic we give them.

We offer some cash prizes to the top 3 entries…and frankly, it can be very entertaining.

In years past, the topics have been subjects like…

“How Poop and Slobber has changed my life” and “When I look through a dogs eyes I see…”

Those are a couple of examples.

This years our topic was….”Since working at Reynolds, the most important lesson I’ve learned is…”

Here is our first place winner this year, Ryan Elder.

(Sorry it is a bit dark…it is night time)

We love how creative these kids can be. We love to hear the many angles that this working experience shows them about life. We appreciate that they can see beyond just the kennel tasks to see that they are learning skills they will use beyond their time with us.

Great Job Ryan!…and everyone else who participated.

Derek and I enjoyed our bonfire night and maybe…just maybe…. they are ready to get back in school…not!
